We have decided to race a glorified lawnmower - a Tuk Tuk 3000km across India to raise money for mental health for Rural Support Trust
Hawke's Bay
Mental health matters + so does the rainforest!
So we thought how about we raise awareness for these causes by racing a Tuk Tuk through India in the beating hot summer. Surely people will want to support such a stupid decision all in the name of charity.
Cue the Rickshaw Run. An enduring race on a auto-rickshaw’s down the whole West Coast of India. A gruelling 3000km. These are essentially glorified lawnmowers that are known to break down constantly. Us and 84 other teams are competing all in the name of supporting charities!
We have all had experiences within the team in having to support those around us and mental health. It’s a conversation that can be extremely hard to have however it’s an important one and the more that we talk about it the more we hope to normalise mental illness as to any other and people to get help.
We have chosen to support a local charity called the Rural Support Trust - and specifically mental health. This trust helps support rural people in times of need. This could be due to financial issues, severe weather events to deal with, relationship difficulties or they are under other significant pressure. The Trust has a range of services and networks that are connected to the community to provide help in these times.
Another important charity close to our hearts is the Cool Earth Organization. This charity works alongside rainforest communities to halt deforestation and climate change. This charity is aligned with the organisation who runs our Tuk Tuk race. We all love travelling and seeing the world however climate change is going to drastically alter the world and our way of comfortable living in the decades to come. So if we can try reduce the effects of it happening, it would be great for all of us so then the future generations can enjoy the world like we’ve been able to.
The Fruit Shop is supporting this charity and donating $1000 towards them - enabling us to raise as much as possible on this page for the local charity - Rural Support Trust.

Alice has grown up in a regional background in Hawke’s Bay - specifically from an orchard and cropping family. Mental health is something that she has seen first hand that isn’t spoken about as often as it should be in the agri sector. It relies on unpredictable weather to determine the success or failure which brings huge amounts of stress. Alice’s involvement has also highlighted to her that it’s mostly male dominated industry and how the average kiwi bloke loves taking about their feelings. Although by means do we think that this illness is gender bias. We really want to make a difference in trying to help those battling get through tough times.
The funds raised will be spent specifically used on mental health services
