Kōanga post cyclone recovery support

$12,295 of $15,000 goal
Given by 185 generous donors in 13 days

Koanga Institute is home to New Zealand's largest heritage food plant and seed bank.

Wairoa, Hawke's Bay

Kia ora friends and family of Kōanga,

We are reaching out to ask for your support, in this very tough time.

Kōanga is home to New Zealand's largest heritage food plant and seed collection.

This collection is of national and global significance and we need your help.

Our area has been hit very hard by the cyclone and we are in a very fragile situation, dealing with cyclone damage to our property, not enough man power to harvest seeds before the cyclone hit, constant rain on the drying seed heads and no power to run the seed dryers.

We are at high risk of loosing this years seed harvest, which will have a catastrophic roll on effect.

We are hoping to raise enough funds for purchasing two seed threshers, which will massively speed up the process of saving the seeds, giving us a chance to catch up and not loose everything.

We are hoping to order a seed thresher for our smaller size seeds and a larger seed thresher for all the corn, peas and beans and bigger seeds.

Our thoughts and hearts go out to everyone affected by the floods.

Kia kaha NZ.

We will support you all in every way we can. Together we are strong.

Kay and the Kōanga team.

Seed Thresher   11 November 2024

Thank you to everyone who contributed! With your support, we were able to purchase a seed thresher, which has had an immensely positive impact on our work. This equipment allowed us to save seeds that were ready for harvest during last year’s devastating floods, preserving valuable biodiversity for future seasons. We are deeply grateful for your generosity in helping us achieve this.

With heartfelt thanks,

Kay and the Kōanga Team x
