Proposal

Kumeu Arts Centre Incorporated are thrilled to announce an exciting new project in conjunction with Rodney Local Board. Plans have been drawn up to build an extension to our existing building (see image). The proposed improvement to our facilities will include a new entrance and reception area, additional gallery and workshop spaces. This would allow us to offer more of our services, including exhibitions, classes, workshops and performances, in a better, more functional building. Kumeu Arts Centre will be able to increase its capacity and offer a more diverse range of options to our community. We would like to start building by December 2018.

Background

Kumeu Arts Centre was Incorporated in 1998 and operates as a not-for-profit, community arts centre. We provide a range of activities for all ages in our council owned building in Huapai. Last year we had well over 10,000 people through our doors. We are funded through contestable grants mainly from Lotteries and Foundation North. The Rodney Local Board funds us $40k per annum, which is a vital component of our operating funding, which we are grateful to receive. It's essential to help us deliver on Council's key arts and culture objectives. Some of our programmes are also supported by the Government funded, council administered Creative Communities Scheme.

Next year will be the 20th year anniversary since the inception of Kumeu Arts Centre. In that time, we have come a long way and the building has been transformed from an unused ex-works depot, ‘tin shed’, to a thriving community arts facility. We are well loved by locals and visitors alike. However, with the increasing population in Rodney the demand for services and public facilities are rising. The Huapai Hub plan also recognizes these demands and aims to develop council owned land at the back of our property into a “safe, vibrant and flexible space for and by the Huapai / Kumeu communities.” We wish to integrate with the Huapai Hub project believing that our two projects will complement each other perfectly, to ultimately create a beautiful, well needed, central space in Huapai/Kumeu. Kumeu Arts Centre Inc. is confident we can help address the community’s growing demands, but only with this expansion. To do this we need your help.

About us

Kumeu Arts Centre was Incorporated in 1998 and operates as a not-for-profit, community Arts Centre. We provide a range of classes, events, and activities for all ages in our Council owned building in Huapai. Last year we had about 11,500 people through our doors. Arts and culture at and through the Kumeu Arts Centre makes a significant contribution to where a dynamic, thriving, and vibrant community. We support the wellbeing and development ofyouth and young peoples, and the recreational and cultural needs of the community. We successfully meet the social and cultural needs of Rodney’s people in many ways including through the provision of events, classes, exhibitions, seminars, other community skills, and art retail opportunities.

Use of funds

The Rodney Local Board have generously allocated $300,000 to help fund our proposed expansion. KACI has allocated $50,000 of our own money. This leaves us approximately $80K short to build the proposed expansion (seen on images). We would like to raise this money by the end of February 2018. Please help us by donating to this cause.
