Helping a pig to get the surgery that it needs to survive.
Kaiapoi, Canterbury
We’ve already had some incredibly kind offers of support, which means so much asking for money was the last thing I wanted to do. The surgery is estimated to cost around $1,000 or more.
Back in November, my husband and I gifted two Kunekune piglets to our child’s preschool. When collecting them, the breeder offered us a third, the smallest piglet, explaining she had a hernia but had been vet-checked and was expected to heal as she grew. Trusting this, and wanting to do something kind, we took her, knowing she’d be loved by many children.
Six months later, the hernia has grown significantly and now requires surgery, which the preschool simply can’t afford. We’ve received a reduced quote, but it’s still a large cost, and there’s no guarantee surgery will fully fix the issue.
Unfortunately, the breeder hasn’t been helpful in resolving this and suggested taking the piglet to the SPCA or a rescue. That doesn’t feel right to us, as it would pass the problem on to already stretched services. We also feel let down, as we were told this was the reason she hadn’t originally planned to sell the piglet.
We take responsibility for our decision, but we’re now reaching out to our community for help. to afford the surgery for the KuneKune.
If you can help, please donate anything helps. Thank you so much for your time and support ❤️
