Kylie's long Surgery and Rehabilitation Battle

Hi Everyone!

My name is Kylie. I'm a 20 year old who lives in West Auckland with my parents. Since I was 11 years old I have had ongoing issues with my knees with having issues around patella dislocations, pain, walking and falls. It all started back when I was 11 and was in a car accident which causes the original injury. It has been an ongoing battle ever since.

When I turned 17 I was by this time having multiple knee dislocations which was really limiting my life and what I could do. It was decided by my specialist surgeon at the end of 2017 that the most appropriate treatment would be Medial Patellofemoral Ligament (MPFL) Reconstruction Knee Surgery. I went on to have this surgery on my left knee in January 2018.

While I was recovering from my left knee surgery I had complications leading to a further two surgeries. During that time I was mainly relying on my right knee to support my weight and do daily living activities. I then completely damaged what was left of my right knee and flipped the patella. All these complications led me to end up in a wheelchair full time.

I have had a long battle over the past year and bit trying to get approval to have surgery to be done on my right knee and last week I found out that I have been approved and having my surgery 15 March 19 . During this period I have had huge expenses to do with specialized transport, daily living expenses, healthcare costs this caused me and my parents to end up in a lot of debt.

I am currently fully wheelchair dependent indoor and outdoor so surgeon has advised me that after this hopefully final major surgery that I will need to an important specialized rehabilitation plan along with this I have been informed that I will need inpatient rehabilitation directly after surgery till I can get back up on my feet and a lot more one on one care and support services. Financially me and my parents are already drained of all funds due to the cost of care over the past 2 years.
