Iconic trees lining the Ladies Mile near Queenstown are growing under power lines. They must be trimmed now. Longterm fix is being worked on

Otago

Trees which line SH6 along the Ladies Mile near Queenstown are to be felled unless funds can be raised to help keep them trimmed. They are growing directly under high voltage lines that service 2600 households.

The owner is no longer in a position to maintain the trees and as they are on private land, neither lines company Delta nor Queenstown Lakes District Council can take over the liability for the ongoing annual trimming.

This page provides the opportunity for people who value the trees to contribute towards their maintenance for what could be up to 30 years.

The Council will act as trustee of the funds and Delta will carry out the annual work,

Queenstown Lakes District Council's involvement (page creator)

Queenstown Lakes District Council has acted on community requests to find a permanent solution that will save these trees. Although the Council cannot commit the ratepayers to funding the maintenance of these privately owned trees in perpetuity, it is working with lines company Delta to find a solution that not only keeps the trees in place, but also keeps them out of the power lines. By donating to this fund, people will be funding the immediate trimming work needed to keep the lines free of branches and prevent power cuts for Lake Hayes Estate, Shotover Country and Arrowtown) and buy time for a permanent solution to be found.
