Layton Swimset Fund Pays For Swimming Lessons For Children 3+ Throughout New Zealand

$38 donated
Given by 6 generous donors in 2 years

The Layton Swimset Fund pays for private swimming lessons for children aged 3+ Nationwide.

Nationwide

Shirley Layton and her son Allan Layton were both family-orientated, supported equality and were passionate about children and young people having access to opportunities. One of the things they both spoke about often was how expensive swimming lessons can be, and how many families must struggle to be able to afford them. Allan and his brother both used to be life-savers, and help train children in safety around water.

Tragically Allan passed away in 2015, and Shirley not long after in 2016, leaving their family bereft of their humour and wisdom. The Layton Family made a donation to the Kiwi Family Trust in their name, as both had involvement with the organisation’s many projects.

Kiwi Family Trust decided to honour their memory by using the money donated to fund swimming lessons for children aged 3+, throughout New Zealand, to see Allan and Shirley’s wish for young Kiwis realised. Families can apply for all children in their household once per year. Please contact us for an application form.

Anyone wishing to apply to this fund can contact Natasha Layton on 0508 543375.

Criteria does apply. All families must either be on a low income (Community Services Card , one wage, low income or pension) or be in other hardship that makes obtaining swimming lessons difficult or impossible.

The Layton Swimset Fund In Hawkes Bay  28 March 2017

The team at Kiwi Family Trust received this heartfelt letter from a little girls parents as part of their application to The Layton Swimset Fund. We have approved two terms of swimming lessons for this Hawke's Bay family. We thought this letter really highlights the need for The Layton Swimset Fund.

Dear Kiwi Family Trust,

I am writing you this letter to go with our application to apply to the Layton Swimset Fund for our daughter's swimming lessons. We believe that we have eligible reasons to apply as we are a one wage family and both have a community services card and cannot financially keep up with her swimming lessons.

I am currently a stay at home mum to two little girls, and my partner works full-time to provide for his family. Because we are on a low-middle income we actually cannot afford our eldest daughter's swimming lessons. She can only attend lessons as I sell belongings and clothing on a weekly basis so that we can cover them.

Swimming lessons are the only extracurricular activity that our daughter does. We weighed up our choices and thought swimming skills were far more important to have than gym or dancing. I felt absolutely awful as in the past, and throughout last year we had no choice but to have a break for two terms (Term 1 and Term 4) for financial reasons and with the arrival of our second baby. Having this break also had a significant impact on her swimming skills and confidence as we almost had to start back at square one when we did return. My daughter's skills have suffered because we haven't been able to financially secure the lessons term after term, consistently.

Unfortunately we are not able to keep asking family members for help with costs every term and are looking at heading back to having another break next term as there's only so many things that you can part with and sell at one time.

I am so grateful that I came across this on Facebook and appreciate the opportunity of being able to apply for such an amazing fund, it is absolutely amazing and so heart-warming. Swimming skills are so important to have. What we have applied for is the total cost of her swimming lessons over the next four terms (one year). It would be an absolute dream if our application was accepted. The relief and not have to stress over what to sell next or have the massive guilt if she couldn't attend anymore will be beyond words. Amazing.

If anymore information is needed I am happy to provide it and also am happy to send along a picture of if needed. Thank you so much for your time.
