38 chinchillas have been surrendered to the rescue in July alone! Help keep them fed and housed until they can find forever homes.
Auckland
In July 2016 the Little Chinchas Rescue Ranch took on the task of caring for 35 chinchillas; our largest ever surrender and the most chins we have ever had in residence at one time.
The chinchillas have arrived at the rescue in varying states of health, we've got everything from chins with mats, hair rings, and open wounds, to furchewers, calcium deficiencies, and fibre deficiencies.
The surrendered chinchillas included 17 males and 18 females, 10 of whom are likely pregnant due to having arrived housed with males.
We currently have a total of 40 chinchillas in residence, with more waiting for spaces to open to be surrendered.
In case you're wondering, that number of chins chews through, on average, around 8 kilos of feed, 3.5 kilos of bath sand, 0.25 kilos of supplements, 19 chew toys, and a decent amount of hay, every week. That's about $400 worth of supplies per week.
And these costs won't be letting up anytime soon!
Chinchillas are pregnant for 111 days, that's 2 weeks shy of 4 months, that means, the 18 females must remain at the rescue for 4 months, the duration of pregnancy quarantine.
Financially we are stretched, can you help?
Every dollar donated will go towards food, housing, hay, chew toys, bath sand, supplements, medications and any vet treatment needed.
I have run the Little Chinchas Rescue Ranch since 2011, in that time I have taken in not only many, many chinchillas but also, occasionally, mice, rats, guinea pigs, and a few rabbits.
