Please help the Leins family repair their smoke damaged home

Ferry Landing, Waikato

On the night of the 24th of January, a clothes dryer caught fire, destroying nearby appliances, the main switchboard, and causing smoke damage to nearly every room in the family home. Luckily everyone got out of the house, and the smoke alarms activated. The home is currently not habitable due to smoke damage and damaged wiring.

The Leins family have one of the original houses in Ferry Landing, still in the family after 3 generations. In September of 2020 John suddenly and unexpectedly passed away, leaving his sons Finn and Ford with the house and three generations of family history and belongings.

Unfortunately, between all the legalities, battles, and trying times that come with the loss of a parent, organising house insurance was overlooked. A lesson learnt the hard way.

With help, financial support and commitment from our community, friends and family we should be able to get things back to normal. Remedial electrical work and a professional clean to remove smoke damage over 3 levels, will cost anywhere from $15,000 to $20,000.

In with the New  30 March 2023

Since our last update, much progress has been made. The biggest job was to sort through all our smoke damaged possessions with much cleaning, storing, or disposing of items. this having not been done over decades was an arduous task, but in some ways, therapeutic to finally have a sort out. We are so grateful to family and friends who have put the hours in sorting, cleaning and carrying boxes and furniture, as well as tip runs.

The house was then professionally cleaned to remove all traces of harmful and carcinogenic smoke residue. Being concrete block construction, this then requires a re-paint, which has been started with help from friends and family.

Electrical repairs have been completed, thanks to Arnie Electrical, Cooks Beach.

Because of the generosity of your donations, we have been eligible to loan the balance to get the house finished - as bathroom renovations were started before the fire. A new kitchen will go in -the first upgrade from the 1970's!

In some ways, a good outcome has arisen from this disaster as it has given us the nudge to refresh our iconic family home.

We are so grateful for everyone's support, financial , emotional and practical is all important to us.

Finn, Ford and family

2% Effective Fee
On average, fundraisers pay just 2% to use Givealittle. This is one of the lowest effective fees in New Zealand fundraising. We charge a 5% platform fee to cover the cost of running the platform. Because most donors choose to top up their donation to cover this fee, the effective cost paid by fundraisers is about 2%. That means around 98 cents of every dollar raised goes to the cause.
