Sonia’s cancer drug is unfunded and she needs your help.
Glen Eden, Auckland
Our beloved Sonia has been diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer. Her previous cancer has returned and spread to the linings of her heart and lungs.
To give Sonia the best chance of staying with us longer, she requires both chemotherapy and an immunotherapy treatment that is unfortunately unfunded. This immunotherapy, if successful, will have better and longer lasting results than chemotherapy.
The treatment is called Pembrolizumab, costs $10,500 per session and Sonia will need at least 5 sessions to determine its effectiveness. The total cost could reach approximately $110,000 if the initial treatments prove successful.
Sonia can fund part of the treatment herself, but we are seeking help to fund the remainder.
People have expressed a desire to assist, and contributing to this treatment is one meaningful way to support her. Sonia is loved by so many and is always there for others and willing to help, so we want to ensure that anyone who wishes to help her can do so. We also completely understand if financial contributions aren't possible and want everyone to know that messages of support or positivity are also greatly appreciated.
Once her chemotherapy is complete, we hope Sonia can fulfil her dream of a holiday in the summer sun next year.
Please consider donating any amount you can to help her reach this goal - Sonia, her family & friends will be forever grateful.
Sonia is one of The Fab 5, a group of friends that are as close as sisters.
Rounds of Pembrolizumab to prolong her life.
Update from Sonia 18 April 2025
Hi everyone, Sonia here, I just want to give a bit of an update and say a huge thank you to you all.
Life has been a bit of a roller coaster over the last six or seven months (to put it mildly). After being released from hospital, I quickly started chemotherapy, and thankfully, I was also able to begin immunotherapy. My doctor was confident that starting both at once would give me the best chance for positive results.
So far, I have been lucky as the Chemotherapy was not as tough as the last time (although still not fun!) and I have noticed some real improvements. I have gotten back into swimming, Pilates, and taking walks again. I even had an awesome day of Black Water Rafting with Nathan - something I never would have thought possible just a few months ago.
I have been catching up with friends, reconnecting with people I haven’t seen in a while, and doing things I love, all while making sure I take the time I need to rest when I can.
I am so incredibly grateful for everyone who has supported me, whether through the Givealittle page, in person, or with encouraging messages. Your kindness has meant the world to me and it is all appreciated.
We are currently waiting on my next CT scan to see if the immunotherapy is doing its job, but my family and I are staying positive about what is ahead and we are especially excited for our family trip to Rarotonga next month.
Thank you all once again - none of this would be possible without your generosity.
Love you all,
Sonia
