Please help Taya get to Showtym Camp in October
Wellington
Taya Wilson is 14 years old and loves horses. Last year she won a scholarship to attend a Showtym Camp hosted by New Zealand's famous Wilson Sisters (no relation).
The scholarship means that she gets to attend Showtym camp (as featured on Country Calendar) for free and learn from the very talented and inspiring Amanda, Kelly and Vicki Wilson. This camp is happening very soon - in October during the school holidays.
A talented rider (mostly self-taught) Taya is a kind, gentle & natural rider, who loves jumping, horsemanship, bareback & bridleless riding, teaching ponies tricks and teaching other kids to love horses as much as she does.
Taya moved to Upper Hutt from Taranaki last year with her mum, brother and little sister. In February 2018 she met me and started riding my fat, Gisborne-stationbred horse “Ettie”, getting him fit, teaching him some new tricks and developing his amazing ability to jump up to & over a metre – which is quite high for a fat, lazy boy who would rather be eating and maybe walking as little as possible.
But it's an awfully long way from Upper Hutt to Showtym Camp, which is north of Whangarei and 2 hours north of Auckland. Taya has already arranged with a lady in Northland to ride one of her horses at the camp, and is hoping to catch a bus for the long journey to spend time with her idols and a handful of other lucky kids.
We are also planning a fund-raising trek on private farmland in Whiteman's Valley, Upper Hutt which will be advertised on Facebook with strictly limited numbers and may be held either before the camp or after, as it is weather dependent and we want it to be a really special, safe & scenic ride.
Taya helps me with my two happy horses. We love to ride out in Mangaroa and Whiteman's Valley, enjoying the fresh air and countryside. What we really do is spend most of our time picking up poo, trying to keep on top of mud, excess hair, hungry bellies & breathing in that special horse smell. We live in Upper Hutt & Lower Hutt and are not related, but have a very special friendship that revolves around a 15 year old Gisborne-stationbred and a 16 year old gingernut Thoroughbred.
No amount is too small and we are just looking to raise enough to cover the costs to get Taya get to Showtym Camp in October. Any extra will give her a little bit of spending money for the long journey from Wellington to Northland.
