Lets fundraise so Dakota can continue to use the life changing technology, and give her mum piece of mind every day.
Auckland
In 2017 Dakota went into a coma while at home on the couch. Her mum was not to know at this point that it was a diabetic coma and her life was at risk. But due to our local fire service and paramedics who responded Dakota came back to us. Over the past few years she has lived life to the fullest enjoying schools, representing hockey at North Harbour level, playing touch and doing all the things other 12 year olds do - however she does this all with a diagnosis of Type 1 Diabetes, and has to do blood prick tests up to 7 - 8 times a day, and if her test isn't good then her mum Michelle has to wake her up every 2-3 hours to keep testing her. This of course is no fun for either of them :(
However, in the last month Dakota has been lucky enough to trial new technology called the Freestyle Libre. This is a reader and scanner that is inserted into Dakota's arm, and reading are now taken with the swipe of a scanner. The tips of her fingers have all healed from the constant pricking, and if testing needs to be done at night Michelle doesn't have to wake her, she just swipes the reader over the scanner. Not only does this mean no more finger tests but it also collects data for Dakota's doctors so they can manage her diabetes, allowing her to live her life to the fullest.
The downside is that after the trial - this new technology is not funded. The cost is $104 every fortnight. Michelle is currently doing this on a fortnight to fortnight basis - unsure every month if she will be able to continue due to the cost.
We would love to help this local family by raising enough to give both Michelle and Dakota piece of mind that they can keep using the Freestyle Libre for the next year.
So lets get fundraising Team Mahu City Express!
Michelle is a community member and we would like to raise money for medical equipment for her daughter
