Please help me afford specialised surgery to turn around my Type 2 Diabetes and live my life to the full....
Auckland
Over the past 7 years, I've struggled to manage and maintain my diabetes at a healthy level. I've followed the recommended nutritionist guidelines, with a combination of dieting and exercise and insulin control medications. But now my body is beginning to show resistance to these treatments and my doctors have recommended I take a more radical approach.
Unfortunately the possible next steps would be injecting insulin which has complications of more weight gain.
I have been advised by my doctors that with the help of this surgery, as well as the lifestyle changes to maintain the benefits of the procedure, I should have a 80%-98% chance of resolving my type 2 Diabetes, and improving my overall health, mobility, fitness, and lengthening my lifespan.
I support my growing son's passion for snow boarding, surfing, and horse riding, but I want to be able to beat this illness so that I can be the dad I feel I'm meant to be, and more than a by-stander.
At the age of 46, I enjoy falling off a surf board, or tumbling down a mountain, but I'd like to glide with a little more finesse....
With the support of friends and family, I'm ready to take the next step and go ahead with the procedure, but getting the money together has been hard.
My health insurance supports the procedure but can only fund up to $7,500 and that leaves a short-fall of $12,500.
In these difficult times, I am ready to pay for as much of it as I can as a working father, but I can't do it alone or without a good support system and the kindness of strangers who are able to help.
Any financial help I receive will go towards paying for the cost of specialised bariatric surgery (Roux-en-Y procedure).
