Lloyd May’s purpose in life was to help people and contribute to the community. He was a school principal, active member of the Pinehaven Tennis Club, a devoted member of the Silverstream Lions Club and a passionate fundraiser for Te Omanga Hospice.
When Lloyd passed away in May this year, he laid down a challenge to the Silverstream Lions Club.
If the Lions can raise $25,000 for Te Omanga Hospice, his estate will match their fundraising efforts dollar-for-dollar.
President of the Silverstream Lions, Anna Wilson-Farrell, says the club has taken up Lloyd’s challenge and set their sights on buying a $45,000 back-up generator for the hospice.
“A new generator means Te Omanga can keep on providing care and support to people and their families whatever happens,” she said.
Lloyd’s daughter Lisa May says, “Dad was known for helping anyone, anytime in any way he could. He will continue to help people for many years to come through the special challenge he laid down to the Lions.”
“Our family was extremely grateful for the exceptional love and care he received while in the care of the hospice,” she said. “A generator is a perfect match for Dad’s practicality and will help the hospice which helped him so much.”
You can make a donation here, or by using your credit card to paywave at the ‘donation pole’ located at Silverstream Cruise and Travel and the Silverstream Lions barbecues outside New World Silverstream most Saturdays.
There are also some great events happening to help ‘generate’ the funds. There is a casino night happening on 3 September and one of New Zealand’s top bluegrass bands, the Port Hillbillies, travelling from Christchurch to play on 18 September, before the annual County Lane Fair on 7 November. These events will be even better knowing that every dollar raised will be doubled by Lloyd’s legacy.
Tickets to the Casino Night and Port Hillbillies concert can be purchased from Silverstream Cruise and Holiday Centre, by emailing silverstream@lionsclubs.org.nz or messaging the Club on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/SilverstreamLions
There are also plenty of other ways to get involved – including sponsorship and help to run some of the events the Lions are also hosting to raise funds. The Club would especially love to hear from businesses who might be keen to partner with us in some way – with raffle prizes, entertainment, printing, signage and advertising.
