Lomanikaya Village Tropical Cyclone Harold Rebuilding Assistance Fund

$10,310 of $15,000 goal
Given by 45 generous donors in 20 days

Lomanikaya Village was badly damaged in the Cyclone. They need help to rebuild the houses, gardens and infrastructure.

Auckland

Tropical Cyclone Harold has badly damaged homes, schools and infrastructure across Fiji with damaged homes and widespread flooding.

Lomanikaya Village on Vatulele Island was badly damaged and many friends of Auckland based Fijian Jowave (Johnny) Vodo want to get help for the rebuild of the houses and infrastructure on the island.

Johnny is a village elder and advises on village improvement projects and is looking to spend more time there now to get the rebuild done.

The money will be provided to the Headman and used only to buy materials to rebuild and repair the village. If there is any left over after that they will ask if it can be used for educational and medicinal supplies.

Our contact in the village who is urgently developing the list of materials required with the village elders is;

Jiuta Boniu Vodo - Mbl contact: +679 2955 031

He will be requesting the funds to buy these items directly from the supplier on the main Fijian island and getting them shipped to the isalnd.

Turaga ni Koro Jiuta Vodo told FBC News that the conditions at the height of the cyclone were worse that TC Winston and about 30 houses have been flattened and all crops destroyed. Vodo says it was the first time for most elders to experience such a cyclone.

“I’m currently standing here at the beach where we have debris all over the place, I can see roofing irons, rooftops, kitchen utensils and beddings everywhere. These are what we rely on and it’s all blown away from our homes. Nothing else is left in our plantation, all the root crops have been uprooted by the strong winds. We really need help. I am pleading with the government to help us now because we have nothing else left.”

An Auckland based company has already stepped up and is putting together a shipment of hardware to build a solar power system over the Easter break. Shipping is the biggest problem to solve at this point but what the villagers urgently need is money to buy building materials to rebuild their huts and village.

Stephen Goodger's involvement (page creator)

My very good friend and local worker Jowave Vodo is living in New Zealand and is an elder of Lomanikaya Village, Fiji and supports the people from working in New Zealand. He asked if I could set up a page to fund-raise for the village.
