SkillWise's theatre project is an exciting new concept in community support for people with disabilities and a unique venue for the city.
Canterbury
SkillWise supports over 220 intellectually disabled adults from our city-central premises in Christchurch. We have a race team participating in the Hanmer 8 Hour Mountain Bike Race, with all funds raised being donated to the transformation of our auditorium into a performance theatre that has been specially designed for the inclusion of disabled people.
This is an exciting project with state-of-the art lighting and sound equipment, plus specially designed seating, stage and backstage areas. Our theatre will provide professional quality facilities that will be an asset to the whole of Christchurch for years to come. It will be used extensively by SkillWise's theatre company, Many Hats, on weekdays and will also be a space for other community groups, organisations and small businesses to come together through performances and events of different and diverse kinds.
Our race team is a mix of SkillWise staff members plus one of the people we support. Our goal is to complete a combined distance of 100 km over the 8 hour race and to raise $5,000 towards the on-going redevelopment of the SkillWise auditorium. We are looking for supporters to financially partner with us to achieve this goal.
SkillWise works in partnership with over 220 people who have intellectual disabilities, their families and whanau. We aim to work with and empower each person to feel valued as a fully participating citizen through work, education and having fun!
The money raised will be a contribution towards the technical infrastructure needed to complete the project, including lighting and sound equipment. This is a big project with many diverse components so all funds raised will be fully spent.
Hanmer 8hr MTB race postponed 17 March 2020
Thank you so much to everyone who has donated so far! Appreciate all your support.
With the current concerns around COVID-19 and the government imposing restrictions on events and public gatherings, the Hanmer Event team have decided that it would be best to postpone the race date to later in the year.
We will continue to train as a team and keep this page going until we hear more information about a new race date from the Hanmer Event organisers.
Again, appreciate all your support so far.
We’re all in this together, keep safe and look after each other.
