Running the Angkor Wat marathon to fundraise for Mae Ra Moe Refugee camp
Wellington
This year I am volunteering as an ESL teacher at the Mae Ra Moe Refugee camp with Project KARE. Project KARE is an all-volunteer, 501(c)(3) non-profit organization improving the lives of Karen refugees by providing school supplies and English language training in refugees camps in Thailand and in Karen State in Burma.
On the 5th of August I will be running in the Angkor Wat Marathon in Cambodia to fundraise to buy supplies that are needed at the Mae Ra Moe Refugee camp (Food, School supplies, First aid supplies).
More than 120,000 Karen people have crossed the Burma (Myanmar) border into Thailand to escape horrific persecution by the Burmese Army. These Karen people reside in isolation in seven refugee camps, surviving on sustenance rations of rice, salt and fish paste. They are not allowed to leave the camps for employment to provide for their families. It is not safe to return home to Karen State in Burma where atrocities of ethnic persecution persist.
