Mark is one of a team of pilots representing New Zealand at the Paragliding World Championships in Macedonia in August 2019.
Otago
Mark has been flying for about 25 years... He's dedicated to the sport, seldomly having the time to focus solely on his own flying. He's previously qualified for the World Champs but has never been able to attend.
Mark's been the President and Secretary of the Southern Club. He’s the current Vice-President of the NZHGPA and has previously been the Operations Manager and Training Manager. He’s a current member of the Training Advisory Group. He's organised the NZ Paragliding Nationals on many occasions and frequently appears on Task and Safety Committees. He's someone who's life revolves around giving back to the sport of paragliding and the community of pilots in which he lives. So much of what he does is voluntary.
The World Championships (http://pgworlds2019.mk/) are being held in Macedonia from the 5th August. He's hoping to compete in a number of competitions in the lead up to the event. A period of focused training will help him to give it his best shot.
Mark's not expecting to return home a World Champion. Competing at this level is "next level" but a mid-field result is in his sights. Participation is about learning. Lessons which will be brought home and shared with the NZ flying community, hopefully for the benefit of everyone.
Mark is planning to submit a funding application to the NZHGPA Discretionary Project Fund Committee seeking support for the World Championships Entry Fee (470 euro per person). This application will be for the entire team and will be shared evenly, if successful.
The campaign is expected to cost in the vicinity $20,000. Fund raising will greatly determine the number of training competitions which he'll be able to participate in, as well as enable him to focus on the flying.
