Our 96 year old War Memorial needs a permanent in-ground Flag Pole and our Memorial hedge has died.
Auckland
The current temporary War Memorial Flag Pole has been in place for several years and needs to be replaced by a more permanent pole with in-ground support. A Flag Pole, flying the New Zealand Flag is an important part all our War Memorial structures and plays an integral role in ANZAC remembrance services.
With the decline of the current hedge in the surrounding Memorial garden replacement is required and the suggestion of a Rosemary Hedge is appropriate. A Rosemary Hedge will be visually similar to the existing, however the significance of this plant is of great importance as Rosemary is the herb of remembrance and is a reference to the hills at ANZAC Cove on the Gallipoli Peninsula.
For these reasons I ask you to consider Giving A Little to help our continued protection of the Matakana War Memorial. Thank You.
We help protect the Matakana War Memorial on a volunteer basis. After witnessing years of neglect and vandalism of the Matakana War Memorial we decided that there needed to be an increase of the profile and a re-education. Consequently over the past 4-5 years we have endeavoured to achieve this by holding remembrance events at the memorial, engaging the community and media. Reminding all of the history, culture and importance of this 96 year old War Memorial.
- New 5 metre permanent in-ground supported Flag Pole to replace the current temporary pole, which is only strapped to the garden wall support.
- New memorial hedge of Rosemary. The current hedge has died.
JOB WELL DONE 13 April 2017
Our new Flag Pole and Memorial Rosemary Garden has been successfully installed by the Local Old Crew from Matakana. The cost was about $250 more than anticipated due to additional freight costs, fertilizer, concrete cutters and cement. So if you still want to donate, it would be appreciated.
Thanks to everyone involved and all our fabulous GIVERS.
Thank you for your kind donation - we will soon be able to cover the entire cost of the New Flag Pole and Living Memorial Rosemary Garden. Everything is looking great for our ANZAC Day Service. If you are in the area please come along - 10am Tuesday April 25th. Thank you again.

Scotty, thank you so much for the donation and story. My Grandfather born in Glasgow 1889 also fought in WW1 with the Gordon Highlanders. He survived the battle fields of northern France and the gas attacks, which damaged his health for most of his life. I do this for him. Regards Adrienne.
