Help Matthew to represent New Zealand at the 2015 Special Olympics World Games
Nationwide
Matthew Slone has been selected to represent New Zealand at the Special Olympics World Games in Los Angeles July/August 2015.
Matthew has an intellectual disability and swims for Waikato Special Olympics.
Obviously this is the pinnacle competition for Special Olympics but it will also be a once in a life time opportunity for him.
While not receiving the same publicity as The Olympics or Para-Olympics, Special Olympics is a truly international sporting movement. In 2015, there will be over 7,000 athletes from 177 countries competing in 26 different sports at the World Games. The opening ceremony will have 80,000 people watching in the Los Angeles Colosseum and the Games will be the biggest sporting event hosted by Los Angeles since the 1984 Summer Olympics
Matthew started Special Olympics swimming when he was eight years old. This is the starting age for Special Olympics. Since that time he has trained and competed consistently. He currently swims for the Waikato team, training at Water World Te Rapa.
In addition to local and regional competitions, Matthew has also competed in the last two national games (2013 and 2009). In Dunedin in 2013 he won 1 Gold and 2 silver in his three events.
Thanks Perago 24 October 2014
Wefd like to thank the Perago Trust for their kind support. The costs associated with competing on a world stage arenft just around the travel. Matthew obviously wants to represent himself and his country to the very best of his ability. To do this he is putting in additional training with a specialist coach ? and the Perago Trust is helping to fund this. With their help, Matthew is doing everything possible to put his best foot forward. Where would New Zealand be without awesome organisations like Perago Trust? Formed in 2011 after many years of contemplation, the Perago Trust is based in Cambridge, in the Waipa district. Known as gThe Town of Championsh, Cambridge has a fantastic environment for the creation and pursuit of excellence in sport. Itfs not just physical resource there is also an abdunance of talented young athletes. However, through a lack of finance, guidance and general support a number of young and gifted athletes often slip through the net and never get to realise their potential. The Peragofs Trust objective is to try and support these special young people and by using the combined skills, knowledge and contacts, the Trustees and supporters will provide access to health, funding, employment, sponsors and sports management thereby helping these young athletes reach their goals. A BIG THANK YOU TO THE TRUSTEES OF PERAGO TRUST
