Helping the kids of Grootberg Primary in rural Namibia get a good night's sleep, and a great education, by donating mattresses.
Auckland
Who knew a group of Kiwi travel agents could be so moved by an impromptu visit to a local school in Namibia? Suckers for a sweet smile, we were soon served a dose of reality when we witnessed the challenges facing these kids on a daily basis.
Grootberg Primary School in rural Namibia operates on the smell of an oily rag. As the kids are coming in from tiny remote villages, each family can usually only afford to send one child, and they have to board at school, sleeping in clean but crowded dormitories, often 4 to bunk, and often with minimal or no bedding to speak of. This does not lend itself to a good sleep, and as a result, teachers struggle with lethargic students.
We asked the amazing teachers of Grootberg Primary what one thing they needed to help their kids get the education they needed. The answer was plain and simple, mattresses. If they get sleep, they can learn, and if they can learn, they can go on to improve not only their own lives, but those of the communities they are from. It's the one big chance they have to break away from grinding poverty.
Our goal is very specific: to raise NZ$7,000 to provide mattresses for this amazing school.
As we were travelling with Ultimate Safaris, we have liaised with their registered charity, the Conservation Travel Foundation (www.conservationtravelfoundation.org) to ensure we know the amount required, and that it will be spent exactly as we intend, which is:
- The purchase of 100 mattresses
- Transport by truck of the mattresses from Windhoek to Grootberg
If you've ever travelled to Africa or elsewhere, and felt the need to 'give back', here's your chance.
Please give a little (or a lot!) to help the kids of Grootberg Primary School - they are bright, enthusiastic, and hopeful - let's make a real, practical, tangible contribution to their futures.

We're a group of Kiwi travel agents raising money to buy mattresses for the great kids of Grootberg Primary in rural Namibia who board at the school and are in desperate need. Give these kids the chance to sleep, learn, and make a real difference in their communities. Every cent will be spent on 100 mattresses and their transport from Windhoek.
Every cent raised will be spent on the purchase of 100 mattresses, and the transport of them from Windhoek. Any surplus (which would be wonderful!) would be spent on blankets, to be transported in the same truckload as the mattresses.
Winter in Namibia 26 May 2018
You wouldn't imagine the hot arid deserts of Namibia EVER being cold, but just as it's getting colder here in NZ, it can get as low as zero degrees at night over there! And yes, it can snow. Spare a thought, as you snuggle into your cozy bed, for the kids of Grootberg Primary School. Very few have mattresses, and the few blankets are highly prized. They are hardy kids, but we'd love to be able to send a little warmth their way by donating 100 mattresses to the school. Your generous donations will help share some warm fuzzies this winter - thank you!
Thank you so much World Journeys for this final and very generous donation to get us over the line! It really is appreciated, and we couldn’t be happier 😊 We will be getting this money over to Namibia shortly, and they will be buying 100 mattresses, and transporting them by truck to Grootberg Primary School in Namibia. The kids and teachers there will be overjoyed. So nice to know we will have made a real difference in their lives. Thanks all xxx Caro, Jo, Jo, Pam, Kerry, Anna and Ros
