Medical supplies for the Ukrainian people

  • Final distributions

      13 April 2022

    Hi everyone

I wanted to send you a quick message to thank you all once again for your support and to tell you about our final distributions.

With your help, we have managed to raise an incredible $47,115.40 (after fees)! These funds have all now been distributed to people on the front lines in Ukraine and have made a real difference to people affected by this terrible war. On behalf of myself and people of Ukraine, thank you for your generosity and support!

Since the last update, we have made three final distributions:

$2,400 was paid to the Military Medical Centre in Lviv after four Russian rockets hit Lviv on 26 March.

$3,500 was paid to a team of volunteer doctors in Poltava on 30 March after the warehouse storing their medical supplies got destroyed by a Russian missile.

The balance of $6,278.45 was paid yesterday to a team of volunteers led by Olena Malenkova (a well-known volunteer in Ukraine, you can follow her on Twitter @realtyblogger). They will use the funds to source medical supplies which will be split between Kharkiv as to 1/3, and Kramatorsk and Slovyansk (which are expected to be the hotspot for the next phase of the war) as to 2/3 of that amount.

Thank you for making a real difference to the people affected by this terrible war.

If you have any questions or would like to chat, please reach out.

  • Two further distributions

    Good morning everyone

Today, I would like to update you on two further distributions. A payment of NZD2,000 has now been made to a non-profit volunteer organisation called "Parus" (Ukrainian for "Sail") in Dnipro. Dnipro has been targeted by Russian air strikes in the last few days and needs our help right now.

The team behind Parus do amazing work helping people of Dnipro, as well as refugees fleeing from Eastern part of Ukraine (from areas such as Kharkiv and Sumy which have been under persistent and horrific attacks over the past two and a half weeks) towards the Western border, as many of them travel via Dnipro.

The second distribution of NZD5,000 will be made today to a charitable foundation called "Svoyi" ("Our Own" or "Our People" in Ukrainian). Svoyi was founded in 2014 to provide medical help to victims of Russia's aggression in Crimea, Donetsk and Luhansk regions and has operated consistently since then.

Svoyi is currently appealing for funds to purchase medical supplies to treat the injured in Kyiv. You can read more about Svoyi here: https://www.facebook.com/cf.svoyi/.

The picture used for this update is from Svoyi's Facebook page. In Ukrainian, it reads: "Great people create great acts of kindness. Cervantes".

Thank you all again for your incredible support and generosity!

  • Fourth distribution (total amount correction)

      10 March 2022

Just a quick note to confirm our fourth distribution has been made (in EURO). Due to exchange rate variation and transfer fees, the total payment made in NZD was $6,436.96. Once again, thank you all for enabling us to do this.

  • Fourth Distribution

      9 March 2022

    Hi everyone

Thanks to your continuing support, we are now ready to make our fourth distribution.

The Main Military Clinical Hospital in Kyiv is a very special place. It has been in operation for 267 years and has seen far too many wars already. In 2020, MMCH produced this video which showcases its history and work: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r7NuK3hrY_M. The video is in Ukrainian but you may enjoy watching the footage regardless. They do incredible work. For example, during WWII, the hospital treated close to 60,000 patients, 80% of whom were able to return to service.

MMCH has been working to secure Vacuum Assisted Closure systems (VACs) since the start of the war. VACs are particularly valuable in treating combat-related wounds, both for soldiers and civilians, where infection and soft-tissue blast damage are common.

MMCH has been able to secure eight VACs from Austria for immediate delivery but only has funds to pay for five. They have negotiated a discounted price of €3,900 per device (instead of the usual €4,900).

Thanks to your generosity, today we will be transferring €3,900 ($6,250) to purchase one more VAC device, for immediate use in Kyiv.

You can read about the use of VACs for combat-related injuries here: https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/health/treatment-tests-and-therapies/vacuumassisted-closure-of-a-wound.

Thank you on behalf of myself and all the people of Ukraine!

  • Second and third distributions

      5 March 2022

As Ukraine enters day 10 of the war, the Ukrainian spirit remains strong, but supplies are running scarce.

I am in touch with non-profit organisations, volunteers and hospitals in different parts of Ukraine. Everyone is asking for urgent help. We are working to ensure our funds go to places most in need right now.

Thanks to your generosity, we are now ready to make our next distributions.

A sum of $6,500 will be paid today to Initiative E+, a community organisation which is providing paramedic support to Ukrainian people. These are courageous people saving lives on the ground right now. You can learn more about them by going to their Facebook page here: https://www.facebook.com/helpEplus.

Our third distribution of $5,000 will be paid to the Military Hospital in Odessa, a city on the Black Sea in southern Ukraine. Odessa is a strategically important target in Putin's war right now. Odessa has been under continuous attack for the past 10 days, but the fighting there is expected to escalate now. In fact, it's been identified as the next big target for Putin's troops. You can read about it here: https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2022/03/04/ukraine-russia-odessa-black-sea/.

In both cases, the funds will be used for medical supplies.

Lastly, I have written an open letter to the Prime Minister asking New Zealand government for a stronger response to the war against Ukraine. You can read it here: https://www.linkedin.com/posts/anastasiya-gutorova-81211276_open-letter-to-jacinda-ardern-ugcPost-6905364042999828480-yL2a.

Thank you all for your continued support. You are making a real difference to the lives of people in Ukraine right now. It does not go unnoticed!

    Anastasiya

P.S. The picture I am using for this update is of Odessa before the war.

Anastasia, thank you for all that you are doing and allowing us here in NZ to feel we can help those on the ground directly through someone who knows where help is needed most.

Through your incredible generosity, we have exceeded our goal of $20,000. So we are increasing our goal to $30,000 so we can help save more lives! Thank you all so much for making a real difference to people who need it the most right now.

  • First Distribution

      3 March 2022
    Main image

    Hi everyone

Thank you again for your amazing support and kindness! We have now exceeded our initial target, which is fantastic, and we are now ready to make our first distribution.

Our first payment of $10,000 will be made to the Hospitallers Medical Battalion (Госпітальєри Госпитальеры Hospitallers) tonight. The Hospitallers are a Ukrainian volunteer medical battalion (not soldiers) providing paramedic services to soldiers and civilians on the immediate front line. If anyone is interested, there is a documentary detailing the work they did during the 2014 Russian invasion in Eastern Ukraine. You can watch the trailer here (warning - it is distressing): https://filmfreeway.com/warforpeacefilm.

The money we transfer will be used for medical supplies.

Thank you again for your support and generosity.

Please remember to share the page with anyone who may be interested in supporting the victims of Putin's war.

  • Update 1 March

      1 March 2022
    Posted by: Anastasiya Gutorova

Hi everyone. Thank you so much for your incredible support. We have not only reached our goal, we’ve surpassed it. This money will make an incredible difference to people wounded by Putin’s war.

As you probably know, the war appears to have entered an even darker phase today, with Putin beginning to deliberately target civilians. Against the backdrop of incredible Ukrainian successes against the odds, reports and videos of the use of thermobaric (vacuum) and cluster bombs are starting to come in, which is deeply concerning. Obviously, these are in contravention of the Geneva convention, but that is of little deterrence. Cities in the East are reporting severe food and supply shortages. A 64km column of tanks, APCs etc is headed for Kiev and Putin’s troops seem to be attempting to cut the eastern cities off from reinforcement. In short, having failed spectacularly to overwhelm Ukraine, he appears to be settling in for a long war.

I am working with a number of people in Ukraine to find suitable partners to supply medicine and medical equipment to those on the ground. I am obviously concerned to ensure your funds reach the right people and go to where they are needed the most right now. I’m also focused on ensuring your money stretches as far as possible, hence not seeking to use an existing international charity which, while doing great work, does incur significant overheads which blunts the impact of contributions.

At this point, I am speaking to representatives of hospitals and various non-profit organisations providing direct medical support to wounded on the ground in Kiev, Odessa and Kharkiv. I am talking to people in all three cities who are sounding increasingly desperate.

I will update you on plans before any funds are distributed.

In addition, you may have seen we have separately started a petition asking the New Zealand government to freeze and, potentially, confiscate the New Zealand assets of Putin’s backers. With the support of some extraordinary friends of Ukraine, that proposal went from initial idea to direct media question to the Prime Minister of New Zealand within 24 hours. It was put to the PM again today and all major NZ news outlets have covered it.

Unfortunately, to date, the only response from the Prime Minister has been: “All options remain on the table”. But we remain hopeful our Government will step up and take decisive action. And in the meantime, the outpouring of support from ordinary New Zealanders for the people of Ukraine has been absolutely overwhelming!

If you would consider signing the petition or sharing it with people you think may wish to support it that would be enormously valuable.

Thank you again for your support. It will mean a great deal to a great many in Ukraine. Please consider sharing the fundraising page and petition with your friends.

    Slava Ukraini!
