Meelo's Bladder Battle

$272 of $4,000 goal
Given by 8 generous donors in 4 weeks

💙 Help Honour Meelo 💙 Our beloved boy Meelo was rushed to emergency vet care with a blocked bladder.

Papakura, Auckland

Meelo, the beloved cat of Alexis and Jeremy, was recently rushed to after-hours vet care with a life-threatening blocked bladder. He was a cherished brother to his many feline siblings and a deeply loved member of the family.

Meelo’s life hadn’t been without challenges. He lost his brother from birth, who tragically went missing, likely killed on train tracks. After this loss, Mum and Dad kept all cats indoors for their safety. Meelo struggled with this change, especially with stray cats outside. To help him cope, Mum and Dad trapped, desexed, and adopted out three cats, while TNR’ing several others in the heart of Papakura.

Despite everything, Meelo was a happy, playful cat. His anxiety medication helped him thrive, and until the day of his emergency, he showed no signs of illness, he was his usual cheerful self. The sudden blockage came as a complete shock.

Initially, the vet believed it was a straightforward unblocking procedure, but they were unable to perform it. A second vet described it as one of the more difficult unblockings they’d ever attempted, noting that it didn’t feel like a typical obstruction. Meelo didn’t present typically during surgery, and while we’ll never know the full extent of any underlying issues, it became clear that further intervention would be extremely risky.

The only remaining option was a major surgery estimated at $15,000, with no guarantee of success and significant stress for Meelo. After careful consideration, Alexis and Jeremy made the heartbreaking decision to let Meelo go peacefully, prioritising his comfort and dignity over prolonged suffering.

Instead of fundraising for ongoing care, this page now seeks to recover the $6,335.89 already spent in the days leading up to Meelo’s passing. Any contribution, no matter how small, will help ease the financial strain and honour the love and care Meelo received.

Thank you for supporting this little family through such a painful loss. Your kindness means the world.

Meelos Passing.   29 September 2025

We made the hard choice to put meelo to sleep on Saturday night. He was a photogenic star right till the end.

He had additional complications and his catheter came out and fluid in his belly.

Based on the stress he would endure and potential cost of an additional $15,000 surgery that may not have fixed his issue. The first vet said it was only unblocking they’ve been unable to perform the second said one of the more difficult unblocking they have performed and it didn’t feel like a typical blockage. But we cannot know for sure any underlying issues; however he did not present typically during surgery. We decided to let him leave peacefully to ensure he did not spent his little life stressed.

We have been left devastated by this. There’s no real way to explain it, unless you’ve had a pet yourself.

Unfortunately we still have a significant vet bill. Which is hard to swallow without any Meelo to comfort us.

Total spent on the 48hours upto his passing was $6335.89.

Breakdown:

Manukau After hours Total: $2,269.14

ARC After Hours: $4,066.75

Based upon this and encouragement from friends we will leave this up to assist in paying for these bills. Based upon contributions it’s reduced to just cover additional costs.

We have appreciated every message and donation so much. It’s so isolating when you’re in grief but we have felt so much support thank you.
