My son Micah has had stomach, throat and heart surgery. He's just turned one month. He has got a few surgeries to go before he can come home
Auckland
My son Micah has been diagnosed with VACTERL association. He has had stomach, throat and heart surgery and has a few more upcoming surgeries to undergo. He was born on the 22/01/17. We thought the world of him when he came out with my wife's labour being only 7mins. 6 days later on the 28/01/2017 we noticed his stomach was really round. We called the nurse and they said it's probably just the baby wanting to pass wind. We decided to go to hospital to be safe. After seeing the doctor they told us our son didn't have a proper anus. We were shocked when told we had to be flown to Auckland straight away because our beautiful son was so sick. Before they did the stomach surgery, they wanted to check his heart first. Upon some investigation they said he would also need Heart surgery soon after his stomach surgery. He has had his heart surgery last Friday but when he came back he crahsed twice and stopped breathing. They found another problem. His airways were abnormal. He had to have surgery on his trachea. No one his weight and age has survived this especially after having 2 major surgeries. They said it was a slim chance he would survive. He has survived and currently is still fighting. He is currently on ECMO while he recovers from all 3 surgeries. He's just turned one month. He has got a few surgeries to go before he can come home. We've been told that he will have to be in hospital for atleast 6-9 months. Any day can be his last day. He was one of the first of his age and weight to have surgery on his airways and be successful. Because this all happened so suddenly and without any prior knowledge. Our son has put us in a tricky spot so we're seeing if we can raise enough so we can leave our jobs and focus on our son. But because we live in another city this is proving difficult. We appreciate any help we can get.
My wife and I are involved in this because this is my first son and I just want to be by his side while he goes through this rough period. But we will have to eventually leave our jobs after our leave runs out.
Funds will be used to pay rent, bills and food while we stay full time with our son. Any left over will be set up in his account for any future bills which I'm sure he will encounter with more surgeries to come.
