Mike Asmussen Memorial Achilles Christchurch fundraiser
Canterbury
Mike Asmussen, a founding member of Achilles Christchurch and visually impaired athlete, passed away after a brief, brutal battle with cancer.
Mike loved running. Through Achilles, and the help of his many devoted guides, Mike enjoyed participating fully in weekly parkruns at Hagley. He had hoped to get to 300 parkruns and made it to 291. Mike ran in the yellow Achilles jersey over 20 half marathons, and completed the New York marathon last year. He and his team even managed a few trail races including the Oxford Odyssey.
When Mike learnt of his cancer diagnosis a few short months ago, Mike and his guides continued running together until he couldn't run, walk or be wheeled anymore.
In lieu of flowers, Mike and his family would love you to make a donation to Achilles Christchurch so that the many athletes with disabilities they support can go to running events around New Zealand.
Achilles is a volunteer organisation that provides guides and support for people with disabilities to participate fully in able-bodied walking and running events.
Race entry fees for guides and athletes, accommodation and travel for guides and athletes when they travel out of Christchurch to compete.
Thank you so much for your very generous donation and kind thoughts. Mike would be chuffed.
Arohanui. Mike loved you all.
