Please support Krystal, a mother of three, whose home was red-stickered after the Dunedin floods
Dunedin, Otago
Kia Ora!
We have set up this Givealittle page to support our dear friend Krystal, a loving mum of three girls and their dog, Hunter. Sadly, their home was red-stickered after the devastating flooding in Dunedin on October 4th, meaning they had to leave everything behind.
Krystal is someone who rarely asks for help, and she has been quietly carrying the weight of this disaster on her own since the floods. It’s hard to believe that this has happened to such a hardworking and caring person, who has done everything in her power to create a safe and loving home for her family. Just over a year ago, Krystal fulfilled a long-held dream of securing this home, pouring her heart, soul, and resources into it for the sake of her girls.
Landslips have developed in front of their home cracking one of the piles and the foundation. Krystal is fully insured, but this falls under the Natural Hazards Commission, which means they will only cover either the land value or the repair costs—whichever is less. They will need to build a high retaining wall and repile. This will cost a massive amount more than the land value.
A few of us have stepped in to set up this page, so that Krystal can focus on getting through each day. Any support you can offer would mean the world to her and her family during this incredibly difficult time. Thank you so much for your kindness and support!
A message from Vikkie: Krystal is the epitome of a hard-working, brilliant mother. Only ever wants what is best for her girls.
Amy: Krystal and I have been close friends for 7 years, after meeting at church, and we run together every Sunday.
Vikkie: Krystal and I met through our kid's school. Our children are similar ages and attend many of the same sports.

Rebuilding her home
Heartbreaking Update 3 February 2025
Krystal has finally received her Natural Hazards Commission (NHC) payout, and it’s devastating. After everything she and her daughters have endured, the payout isn’t nearly enough to bring them home.
NHC is covering $35,651.46 for house repairs, but without stabilizing the land—damaged by a landslip—fixing the house is pointless. The estimated land repair cost is $193,267.00, yet NHC is only paying $51,832.37, leaving a $141,434.63 shortfall just to make the land safe to rebuild.
💔 The Harsh Reality
Krystal and her daughters are stuck in limbo. She still can’t be with her beloved dog, Hunter, until they have a home. Selling isn’t an option, and the only path forward means taking on massive debt. By August, she’ll be paying both rent and an unaffordable mortgage while still being charged rates on a red-stickered home. Even with a bank loan, repayments will be crippling. The emotional and financial toll is overwhelming.
Krystal has done everything she can, but she can’t do this alone. Any donation, share, or message of support makes a difference.
Krystal is a hardworking, devoted mum of three. She never asks for help and she has carried this burden since the devastating Dunedin floods in October.
Just over a year ago, she achieved her dream of owning a home, pouring her heart into creating a safe, loving space for her girls. Now, that dream is slipping away.
Thank you to everyone who has supported her so far—your kindness keeps her going.
