Upgrading our MHC indoor Rock Climbing wall so it can be developed into a certified wall which is usable by our community.

Methven, Canterbury

Mount Hutt College is aiming to upgrade our indoor school rock climbing wall. As a college, we are looking to grow climbing in the region for both MHC students and to introduce more members of our community to climbing. To get our wall certified, we are required to carry out a number of additional safety features (which MHC has committed $10,000 towards). This includes adding a safety barrier to meet national level safety requirements and upgrading our anchors for elad climbing. While this work is completed, we are striving to have funding to also upgrade the wall by obtaining new climbing holds for the entire wall and volumes being added.

For 2024, we have approximately 90 students (Yr10 - Yr13) out of our 550 students on the roll taking Outdoor Education. Climbing is becoming an integral part of our program and we are excited to see their progress during the year. When completed and the wall has been signed off with it's certification, this would also allow us to;

Start a school climbing club, so students who aren't enrolled in our Outdoor Education program could also learn to climb. Run a trial in 2024 for members of the community to use the wall in the evenings. The goal is to raise the remaining $15,000 so the wall can be installed and certified.
