Support needed from our community to relocate to Golf Road Reserve
Mount Maunganui, Tauranga
We’re on the move and we need your help! For nearly 50 years, Mount Maunganui Playcentre has played a vital role in local families’ lives, delivering free play-based, child-led learning with parents at the heart of their child’s development.
We strongly believe in the Playcentre kaupapa “Whānau tupu ngātahi - families growing together” and have supported thousands of children from diverse backgrounds to develop through play since we opened in 1974.
Our relocation is key to continuing our strong family centred legacy. We have leased the same building for the last 48 years and are operating at near full capacity. As part of the council’s redevelopment of Blake Park, we are required to move to Golf Road Reserve. By supporting our fundraising efforts, you can help ensure our community has the Playcentre experience for generations to come.
Despite financial support from Playcentre Aotearoa, Ministry of Education and Tauranga City Council, we still need an estimated $84,000 to complete the build. Without it, we will face closure. Every small donation makes a difference.
Here are some ways to support us:
$25 buys a new book for our bicultural library
$75 to purchase instruments for music and movement
$120 for a wooden painting easel
$250 towards construction and science materials
$500 towards our swing set or outdoor climbing tower
$1000 to secure your name on the supporters’ mural at our new centre
Please share our page with friends, extended family and Playcentre whānau.
Mount Maunganui Playcentre since 1974 has been a parents' village and community lifeline for many local families, providing opportunities for self-directed, free play and responsive, respectful and loving relationships. At Playcentre, we recognise that parents are the first, and most important educators of their tamariki.
Our members have the opportunity to see their children flourish in our surroundings - they are able to play with them, learn alongside them, and encourage them to interact with others while meeting other parents and educators.
With over 400 centres across the motu - all managed by parents/caregivers, with the support of our charitable trust, Playcentre Aotearoa - we foster the involvement of whānau through early childhood education.
Playcentre is a one of a kind experience for kiwi families, that allows parents, caregivers and grandparents to be part of their children’s education and gain qualifications as well. This unique opportunity sets Playcentre apart from any other kindergarten, childcare, preschool and daycare option.
As a family, and as a community, parents are able to build a village with Playcentre; making life-long friends along the way. And we know that more than ever, creating a village and a community to support families in the early years creates better outcomes for all New Zealanders.

Our build is underway! 7 August 2024
On the 25th June, 2024, after many challenges and milestones, Diverse Building and Developments started construction on our new Playcentre at Golf Road, Mount Maunganui.
Since then, significant progress has been made including foundations, framing and planting out the roadside mara (garden) by our tamariki.
Thank you to our relocation committee for their continued efforts and the many businesses who have supported us along the way.
We are looking forward to moving into our new Playcentre by the end of 2024.
Keen to help us cross the finishing line? We still require $100,000 to complete our landscaping, playground and outdoor areas at our new Centre. You can support us by
making a donation here or contributing to our wishlist of resources https://www.hintregistry.co.nz/browse/mountplaycentre
To ensure our tamariki get to enjoy a playground, pathways, kai gardens, and landscaping this summer at Mount Maunganui Playcentre, please donate to our Givealittle page now. And share with your family and friends too, who may be in a position to lend a hand.
