Mr Ginger Needs Life-Saving Help

  • Sad News

      27 November 2018

    Hi everyone,

Sadly, Mr Ginger passed away at 3:22pm this afternoon.

He returned to the vet's yesterday and went back on an IV drip, after experiencing a bad vomiting on Sunday night. Preparations also got underway to proceed with a blood transfusion which I decided to proceed with.

I went to the vet this afternoon about 3:10pm for an update, and if he was well enough he was going to come home for the night again.

The vet explained that he had worsened far enough that she believed he would likely pass away within 24 hours, probably during the night, and so we agreed that I would take him home and let him sleep on the bed with me one final time. I then asked the vet if she could administer some pain relief to make his final hours more comfortable, and she agreed.

While we were talking, his calm breathing changed to deep breaths, and we thought he may be trying to vomit again.

The vet went into the next room to prepare the pain relief injection, and I picked him up from his cage to cuddle him. As soon as I did he relaxed in my arms, and I said to the vet that I think he will go within the hour.

A minute later I felt him go limp, and he passed away in my arms. It would seem he spent the day waiting for me to come back for him, then once in my arms chose to leave us.

I do not yet know the final bill for his ten days of treatment, but please don't make any further donations.

Thank you so much to all who donated or helped in some way, it meant so much to be able to give him all the healthcare options available, and to know that we did all we could to try to save him.

I'm really going to miss you Mr G. No more headbutts :(

  • Update on Mr Ginger

      23 November 2018

Thank you to everyone who has donated to, or shared this cause, it is so very much appreciated. You're all so kind and generous!

Unfortunately, despite a week at the vet on IV drip, steroids, anti-biotics, etc, Mr Ginger's body is still not producing new red blood cells, and he has become more anaemic.

They have given me the choice between euthanasia, or sending him to Massey University in Palmerston North for additional expertise and treatment. However, this could end up costing several thousand dollars.

I have asked the vets to consider a blood transfusion, as this will immediately boost his red blood cells, strenthening his body and making him feel better, but beyond that I can only decide upon whether or not to send him to Massey according to whether or not finances allow. It's a very hard decision, I very much want to put his life ahead of money concerns.

I will update again if/when he has a blood transfusion. In the meantime, I have brought him home today for 24 hours, to give him a break from 8 days in a litte cage in a room with dogs. He's currently lying in the sunny lounge, and will return to the vet's tomorrow.
