Assist FMC meet Official Information Act costs to investigate DOCs decision to ignore daily helicopter landing limits on Mt Tutoko.
Southland
National Parks are managed through public processes and detailed management plans. It is how the interests of the environment, the people within it and future generations are protected against commercial exploitation.
Mt Tutoko is part of a designated "remote zone". Its helicopter landing sites are strictly limited in number and volume. DOC has declared it is going to ignore these limits on one site, the Ngapunatoru Plateau, which will lead to up to an 8 fold increase in helicopter landings.
The reasons given by DOC do not stack up. Commercial interests appear to have prevailed. The integrity of National Parks is at threat.
