A really bad back took my freedom; surgery in India could give it back
Nelson / Tasman
"For years, I’ve lived with constant, debilitating back pain caused by spondylolisthesis, Pars Defects and severe damage between my L4 and S5 vertebrae. What started as occasional discomfort gradually became a daily battle — standing, sitting, and even sleeping have become painful challenges. Simple things that most people take for granted, like walking for more than a few minutes or lifting something light, can leave me in agony for days.
In New Zealand, I’ve tried everything that was available — physiotherapy, pain management, and specialist consultations. Unfortunately, I’ve reached a point where there’s no real support or surgical pathway left for my condition here. The system has its limits, and I’ve hit every one of them. The pain keeps getting worse, and it’s starting to affect not just my mobility but also my mental health and independence.
After a lot of research and discussions, I’ve learned that my best chance of recovery is in India, where there are specialist spine surgeons and advanced surgical options that could finally help stabilize my back and relieve the pain I’ve carried for so long. It’s not an easy decision — it means leaving home, traveling while in pain, and facing a major surgery — but it also means hope. The hope of living without constant pain, the hope of standing straight again, and the hope of getting my life back.
This journey isn’t just about surgery; it’s about reclaiming my future. Every day I remind myself: I am bent, but I have not been broken."

All funds raised will go towards flights ($8,000), local travel, spine surgery, physio and hydro therapy in India. Funds may also go towards accommodation in India if the recovery does not go well, and I will post a page update to let donors know if funds go towards this.
Thanks so much. I really appreciate it.
