Myanmar: Helping to repair rooves and ceilings after a cyclone wrecked everything.
Christchurch, Canterbury
Myanmar: For every dollar you give, we have a supporter who promises to give a further dollar.
First Covid 19, then a coup and now Cyclone Mocha.
Myanmar is one of the most difficult countries in the world to live. Since the army forced the democratically elected government out of power the people have suffered badly. Many people have now taken to protesting, some have been murdered and bombed, others have fled to refugee camps in neighbouring countries while still others have taken up arms.
During Covid, the army led government looked after themselves rather than its citizens. And now a cyclone. Cyclone Mocha tracked straight over the top of Sittwe city with winds of around 200km/h killing many. You can read about it here in this CNN article. https://edition.cnn.com/2023/05/20/asia/myanmar-cyclone-mocha-damage-interviews-intl-hnk/index.html
My Burmese friends there have a compound where three different rooves were either taken or badly damaged. This compound is for very poor kids to be sponsored to live and study so that they can graduate high school. In this way, they can lift themselves and their families out of poverty. Already two boys have graduated university and are now helping others and their own whanau.
It is just so unfair that this has happened to such good people who are already so economically disadvantaged.
I have been supporting these guys for many years. I know them well and I am very confident in them. They do not waste money and are genuinely caring of the kids. They have been operating for more than 10 years.
To repair the rooves within a compound that cares for and educates impoverished young people. And also to purchase a small power generator. If we do not meet our target then we will send all of the funds that we do receive.
