Nanay Corazon (my other mum) has discovered a growth on her left breast and desperately needs treatment.
Wellington
Nanay Corazon lives in the Northern Luzon province of the Philippines. A humble mother and wife who spends her days tending their little farm alongside her husband and children, she barely makes enough money to cover their basic living costs.
She has been diagnosed with breast cancer and is needing to undergo operations and has been given a date of 12 May to start - however, she needs to front up with the money straight away.
In the Philippines, the public health system is seriously lacking and unless you have money, you don't get treated.
It has been estimated that her first surgery will cost around NZD $1500 and that is not including the costs of treatment and transport and any other medication that may be required.
I desperately want to be able to send her the money but I do not have it myself.
Nanay Corazon became my other mother when I met her daughter Aizha as a missionary. We were companions in the Australia Brisbane Mission. I have travelled to the Philippines twice to stay with her family and I love Nanay as I love my own mother.
All funds will be used for the costs involved in helping my Nanay to be treated for and recover from breast cancer.
That is:
- transport to Baguio from Tarlac in an ambulance (not publically funded) - this is a 5 hour return trip
- ultrasounds, biopsys, removal of malignant tissue
- further treatment as recommended by specialists - ie. chemotherapy or radiation
