Napier Central School Code Club - micro:bit

$355 of $270 goal
Given by 8 generous donors in 21 days

I am fundraising to get more micro:bit devices. I currently have 11 and would like 10 more to get enough for the whole class.

Hawke's Bay

The micro:bit (https://microbit.org/) is a small, affordable computer designed for teaching programming and electronics to children. I bought one to evaluate it, and it seems like a good fit for the Code Club I run at Napier Central School. I recently entered a competition to win a set of 10 micro:bits and was successful - we now have enough to use them in in term 4.

The students have been working in Scratch (https://scratch.mit.edu/) and Python with some work done on the two Raspberry Pi computers we have. Using the micro:bit will allow the students to:

• Use their Scratch skills to program something that doesn't run on their own computer.

• Disconnect the micro:bit from their computer and move around with it.

• Write programs that can communicate between the micro:bits (using Bluetooth).

• Create projects that extend the micro:bit (basic electronics).

• Understand how programming relates to all the devices in their world (e.g. microwaves).

The current amount of 11 is enough to teach using groups of two, if we got another set of 10 we should almost have enough for everyone in the class (up to 25).

Use of funds

The target amount is enough to buy a box of 10 micro:bits. If there are less funds I will get individual devices (each unit costs slightly more than those from a box of 10). If there is more I will buy extras or accessories.

Thanks everyone!  20 October 2018

Thank you everyone who donated! With the funds we were able to puchase the second set of micro:bits and have enough for everyone in the class.

Last Thursday we did the first session and everyone seemed to have a lot of fun getting into the projects. I think the crowd favourite was the Fortune Teller project - programming the micro:bit to act like a magic 8-ball.

2% Effective Fee
On average, fundraisers pay just 2% to use Givealittle. This is one of the lowest effective fees in New Zealand fundraising. We charge a 5% platform fee to cover the cost of running the platform. Because most donors choose to top up their donation to cover this fee, the effective cost paid by fundraisers is about 2%. That means around 98 cents of every dollar raised goes to the cause.
