Bay of Plenty

Our children need the opportunity to experience the world just as much as every other child. Children with Cerebral Palsy endure more than most do in a lifetime. Going out with a child who isn't mobile is a huge effort, especially when there is medical and complex issues involved. Much of the effort is the reality of a disability!

Most parents will never have to live through the anguish and despair of finding out that their child is not normal. They will not experience the unavoidable feelings of guilt, nor the need to try and blame somebody or something. They will never truly understand the feeling of hopelessness that hangs over the family of the child which is not normal. Yet, for many, this scenario is their nightmare reality.

Of course, nobody can even begin to calculate the hidden cost of brain injury, the human suffering of not only those directly affected, but also that of their families and friends. This aspect alone makes brain injury a problem of major proportions.

We are planning on having six of our members attend a three week Neuro-Developmental Therapy program with The Timmermans Method in Auckland. During intensives, the family are trained to help like therapy assistants. This results in them being able to carry out a high quality home program. While children will make progress during the intensive, the home program maintains these results and often builds upon them. Children who get the best results over time are also the ones who do the best home programs.

Parents want to provide the very best for their children and this is no different for parents of children with brain injury. We know that through this support our children will gain a huge boost in self-confidence and personal development, the outcome that they are able to reach their full potential.

About us

The Brain Injured Children Trust exists to improve the lives of children with brain injuries and their whanau. We do this by providing life-changing financial, emotional, and practical support, so that families can undertake home-based therapy programmes with their child.

The objectives for which the trust is established are: -

1.1 To provide physical, emotional, and financial support to the families with children on a Neuro-Developmental Therapy Program in New Zealand

1.2 To stimulate within the community in New Zealand an awareness of the problems experienced by families with a brain-injured child and the benefits of the Neuro-Developmental Therapy Programs

1.3 To prevent the potential family crisis situation that can arise due to the effects the presence of a disabled child can have on the family structure.

1.4 To assist the brain-injured child to flourish and reach his or her full potential

1.5 To organise facilities and research which will assist in carrying out the Neuro-Developmental Therapy Programs in New Zealand

Our funding dollar literally helps children learn to walk and talk.

Use of funds
