Raising funds for Neeraja's hospital bills
Auckland
After many years of dialysis, uncertainty and waiting, on 6 June 2016, Neeraja finally received the kidney that she needed to survive. The surgery was carried out in the Christian Medical College and Hospital in Vellore.
Neeraja is from a poor family in southern India. Her father, who works as an autodriver, could not afford treatment. Her mother, who passed away about a year ago strove till her last breath to make Neeraja comfortable, spending all her free time in the hospital chapel praying.
Neeraja's brother Sundar left the comforts of home to work in Nigeria to be able to send funds home for her treatment. Sundar and his wife Ambika have recently moved to New Zealand.
When the kidney match came back positive, payments had to be made. The hospital was gracious and proceeded with the surgery even before the payments were made. At the same time, friends quickly loaned the family enough money to pay for the surgery.
Sundar and Ambika need to return these funds and also provide for Neeraja's treatment, especially for the next six months, when she will require special care. Because they have just come into the country, this GiveALittle page has been created to raise enough funds to see Neeraja through this phase.
My husband and I met Sundar and Ambika unexpectedly in May---a God-ordained crossing of paths. We heard their story. On 6 June 2016, Ambika told me the wonderful news about the kidney match and the transplantation.
We have used GiveALittle before to raise funds, and we felt that here was a good cause.
An outcome that we did not wish for 9 July 2016
It is with sadness that I inform you that Neeraja passed away this morning in Vellore.
The transplant itself was successful but she had unexpected complications.
We will not keep this page open till December as planned initially; but would hope that we can still make a significant collection. Although the outcome was not the desired one, hospital bills which run into 1000s of dollars have to be paid.
Please donate what you can. No amount is too small.
I will post more details in the coming days.
