Post Cyclone Lola Appeal for Nelson and Heidi’s Panita Village (Tongoa Island Vanuatu) Community

$1,045 of $2,000 goal
Given by 10 generous donors in around 6 months

Help us to help our Vanuatu Families rebuild family homes and re-establish food gardens post Cyclone LOLA.

Wellington

Severe Tropical Cyclone Lola made landfall on the Pacific Island nation of Vanuatu on 25th October leaving a trail of destruction!

Families have not long recovered from Severe Tropical Cyclone Judy & Kevin who hit Vanuatu back in March of this year!

We have been in touch with our families and know they are safe but yet again there has been significate damage not only to homes but to food gardens that our people depend on for survival.

We will keep you updated on the progress of this appeal and of news and images of the village. We have added some images that we have received from our family members in the Village and included a couple of maps so you can see where exactly our village is.

We are heading home for Christmas in the hope that we can use any funds raised to help with supplies and contribute to the manpower needed to rebuild and replant. We have included an image from our last trip 4 years ago!

We thank you all for your love and support xx

Cyclone relief update after our trip home  2 February 2024

Happy New Year! We wanted to update you all post our 6 week trip home to our Village! We had an amazing time spending quality time with all of our family. We are pleased to report the Village and Island has recovered well after 4 cyclones in 2023. Collectively we decided the priority is to save the village and the petrol station from further damage & destruction caused by flash flooding. For us to achieve this we have used all funds donated to purchase as much as the funds would allow, Gabion Baskets. We purchased these when we arrived back on the mainland and have shipped to the island. A gabion is a type of wired basket filled with various rocks or soil that helps prevent erosion, retain a slope, or provide a landscape element. We intend to use these to construct a defense wall that will prevent further flooding and erosion to the village road and ultimately save the petrol station. Prior to us leaving, the village council organised a small ceremony to thank us and to thank all of you who kindly donated. And so on behalf of all of the Panita Village people....Thank you very much.

We have included some photos from our trip and where the Gabion Baskets will be constructed, check out the image at the top of the main page.

We will update you again at a later stage with the progress.

Thank you again!
