Nelson Musical Theatre

NMT (formally Nelson Operatic Society) is the oldest theatre company in Nelson and the only theatre group which owns its own premises. We are an incorporated society and registered charity. This year we are celebrating our 60th anniversary!

NMT is a community theatre in every respect. We have no paid employees, with all activities being undertaken by volunteers. Last year over 13,000 volunteer hours were contributed to running of the theatre and staging of shows.

With no wages to pay and a building of our own we are able to produce and deliver high quality shows at low cost and also to make our premises available to other arts groups as well.

Last year we had over 20 outside groups use our theatre for performances or workshops. Many of these are hosted for nominal hire cost, as part of our contribution to the wider community arts scene. In addition, we offer an allocation of complimentary tickets to our productions to various community groups. For our most recent show, “The Wizard of Oz”, complimentary tickets were distributed to Big Brothers, Big Sisters and Victory School.

However, theatre ownership does come with costs of ongoing maintenance, much of which is of an unpredictable nature. At the moment our biggest priority is repair and painting to the outside of the building - and we need your help raising money to complete this important project!
