While we remember Gallipoli 100 years on, families in Nepal are going through their own hell. I appeal to you to help the families affected
Auckland
A powerful 7.8 magnitude earthquake rocked Nepal just before midday on ANZAC day Saturday, 25 April, killing hundreds of people, collapsing homes and historic temples, and triggering avalanches on Mt Everest.
Just when the relief is reaching the families in Nepal another 7.3 magnitude quake stuck on 12 May.
Reports from officials have said as many as 8000 had died and 17866 are injured. The United Nations says 8 million people - more than one quarter of Nepal's population - have been affected.
That includes two million children who urgently need your help.
Kiwis understand earthquakes and we have a deep affinity with Nepal. I appeal to you to help the many families affected in Nepal at this time.
Saturday 2 May ChildFund emergency relief workers reached remote villages in Sindhupalchowk, one of the hardest-hit areas. They distributed 10 tonnes of rice, 1.5 tonnes of dahl (lentils) and salt; which will support more than 10,000 children and family members in the area.
Jake Lyell, currently in Nepal working for ChildFund, was with the emergency team as they distributed relief supplies. He says the devastation is eerie – Nepal’s stunning landscapes juxtaposed with wreckage and rubble.
Distributing more food relief is a high priority, as are water, shelter, medical aid and the protection of children. ChildFund will continue with relief efforts supporting the people of Sinduhpalchowk.
Please give what you can right now, many children are living out in the open, very scared and looking for our help. I know you will help if you can.
