We're starting up self-sustaining clinics in targeted rural areas that have never had a clinic before.
Canterbury
We're excited to start brand new clinics in rural Northern Uganda. We'll put the clinics where there is no quality primary health care available. We'll only put them where the community thinks they are needed. We'll deliver efficient, high quality, well supervised healthcare, using methods already tried and tested in the other health centers we operate. We believe that within 6 months, the community can sustain some of these clinics with their own resources. If the community support isn't enough, and the clinic doesn't become sustainable, we'll have to let it go. Although we're raising money through this New Zealand based platform Givealittle, if you have a credit card you can give from anywhere in the world.
- Each clinic will be run by one qualified nurse in a hard to reach, rural location in Northern Uganda
- Patients will pay a small fee which covers the consultation, testing and treatment. This fee will be set through discussion with the community.
- Each clinic will cost 3000 NZ dollars as seed money to start up and run for 6 months. About 60% of this will go to the nurses salary and drugs. 35% will go to building rent and other equipment (Desks, chairs, stationary). Only 5% will go to in-country admin. Once we raise 3000 dollars, we'll start a new one.
- After 6 months of the health center running, we will judge if the clinic can sustain itself (yay!). If so, it keeps going on its own. If not, we shut it down.
- Even if the clinic fails to become self sustaining, it still will have treated over 600 patients, It then becomes a short term village healthcare project, which is more efficient than many NGO run programs. Nothing will be wasted. Drugs and equipment will be shifted to other clinics.
- My hope is that 2 or 3 out of the 5 clinics we start will be self sustaining and continue indefinitely
- We'll keep you updated with the progress of the clinics, including the number of patients treated there and how they are doing from a sustainability perspective. We'll be honest with you whether its going well or not.
If you want more info on locations, how this works or our specific buisness plan, flick me a message and we'll talk via e-mail or on skype.
I am the Health Co-ordinator for the Diocese of Northern Uganda. With our office assistant Akwero Fiona and Nurse Natasha Brice, we'll be starting up the health centres, and supervising them to ensure a high quality service.
