Please help us move and restore the old Newmarket Signal Box.
Auckland
Originally located at Newmarket, in Auckland, and controlling the junction to the western line, the signal box was removed in 2006 when the Newmarket station and the junction were redeveloped. Instead of it being demolished it, and the Newmarket Station, were moved to storage in a house moving yard in West Auckland. KiwiRail were keen to see the box preserved and have offered to Mainline Steam. We realised that this would be an excellent addition to our new depot were are developing at Mercer, south of Auckland. We need to move it from its present location to a temporary location at Mercer while the new Mainline Steam site is developed. While the box is in storage at Mercer the plan is to do as much renovation as possible and then move it to its permanent home.
Obviously all of this costs and we hope that people will be generous enough to donate to this historic project. The move alone is $8000 and then there will be materials towards the restoration. We have already been pledged some of that total but urgently need more. Anything you can donate would be very much appreciated.
Mainline Steam has depots in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch where steam trips are regularly operated in the surrounding areas.
