Mainline Steam

Mainline Steam was founded over 30 years ago with the vision of restoring and operating examples of New Zealand’s historic steam locomotives. From the original purchase and restoration of J1211 Mainline Steam has grown to maintain depots in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch and through the dedication and hard work of its volunteers has restored eight magnificent steam locomotives to operable condition. In those years we have also operated steam excursions the length and breadth of the country giving thousands of people, young and old, the chance to see, and interact with, a living, breathing steam locomotive.
