Seeking funds to buy Ngunguru Sandspit (south end) and Whakairiora Maunga.
Ngunguru, Northland
Save Whakairiora Maunga and Pī Manu (Ngunguru Sandspit)
Spiritually Sacred
Ecologically Special
It's future lies in our hands
In 2012, 83 hectares of Pī Manu (Ngunguru Sandspit) on the Tutukākā Coast came into public ownership after a hard-fought local campaign. However, a precious 69 hectares of the southern end and the adjoining maunga (mountain) Whakairiora remain privately owned by a development consortium. There is public road access to the boundary near the lower southern slope of Whakairiora which leaves the area vulnerable to development if it remains in private ownership.
The land is wāhi tapu to local hapū and a rare intact Northland coastal ecosystem supporting a diversity of plant and animal species - many of them at risk and endangered. Follow this link to learn more about the area https://tinyurl.com/2p8zjjzr.
Now, the current owners are prepared to sell this taonga into public ownership for $3.6 million, conditional on all finance being arranged by 28th February 2022. A Sale and Purchase Agreement with the Ngunguru Sandspit Protection Society is in place and if our proposed purchase is successful, the land will become part of the Department of Conservation (DoC) estate owned by the Crown and managed under a trilateral arrangement between DoC, local hapū and the Society.
The amount we need to raise through the Give a Little Campaign is $1.5 million.
We need everyone passionate about preserving this place of significant spiritual and ecological heritage to give generously. Let’s act now for our children’s children.
To the first 200 donors of $1000 or more, a limited edition print "The Tranquil Spit Endures" by local artist Steve Moase will be made available. Enquiries to secretary@ncag.org.nz.
This charity was set up in 2007 to continue the work of the local community, which began in 1965, to protect about 152 ha of Ngunguru Sandspit and adjacent coastal land from development and educate the public regarding protecting natural resources.
To purchase land (68.733 hectares) from development company. Any surplus raised will be used for pest and weed eradication. Fundraising will continue if Givealittle target of $1.5million is not reached.
For our children's children 11 March 2022
Firstly apologies to all of you wonderful people who have donated to our cause for the lack of Page Updates since January. Our campaign to raise funds has been a "roller coaster ride" because of a surprise development which took place shortly after we published our Givealittle Page in early December. We were not aware that there was opposition to our objective of acquiring Ngunguru Sandspit(balance) and Whakairiora in the name of the Crown, and the strength of that opposition from a group of local hapu members. The consequence has been that our overall funding goal has not been met by the finance date of 28 February and the sale and purchase agreement has been cancelled by the Vendor. It is therefore unlikely that the purchase will proceed and so we have decided to refund in full all Givealittle donations which were made. This will be done as soon as possible. Should the opportunity arise to enter into a new sale and purchase agreement without opposition from the hapu group we will publish a new Givealittle Page and a new campaign will begin. Our heartfelt thanks to everyone who donated so willingly to our campaign.
