Help me get top surgery!
Wellington
Turns out public top surgery options are still locked by DHB, so I am looking into private options, as Capital and Coast are not offering GP referrals. The amount I'm fundraising is not even half of the costs associated with top surgery - the rest will need to come from savings, which gives some insight into the financial barriers in accessing gender-affirming healthcare. This healthcare is still considered to be "cosmetic" by many health insurance providers, which means the total cost (which is closer to $40000) must be met entirely out of pocket.
This is a cost I am lucky enough to be in the position where I could potentially reach that goal myself, over years of saving, but I am also in the incredibly exciting position of becoming a parent in a few months! The recovery from this surgery requires no lifting for six weeks, and anyone who has met a baby or toddler knows that isn't really an option for parents, hence the timing for this one.
I've been really lucky and well supported in my transition so far, and am grateful for all the support I have thus far received.
This goal works towards bringing the cost of the surgery down to a somewhat more manageable amount for a loan. If the goal isn't met, all money will still go towards the surgery fund.
Thank you for your support! 21 August 2025
Thank you to everyone who has donated. My surgery is scheduled for two weeks from now, and I have gotten to a point where I have been able to secure a loan. I am beyond grateful to everyone who donated, shared, or wished me well.
