What a year it’s been. Amidst hardship and toil the majority have pulled through and can celebrate the fruit of their success. Four of those who received scholarships achieved awards for Academic Excellence, scoring an average above 90% across all their subjects.

On behalf of the students, parents, teaching staff and myself, a heartfelt ‘Thank you’ to all who supported these children this year.

    Feliz Navidad y Prospero 2021.

As the children prepare for end of year exams, storms Ola and Iota have wreaked havoc. Central America has been hit by two cyclones within the last two weeks; Honduras being the hardest hit.

The impact has caused widespread flooding leading to power cuts, and extensive damage to infrastructure and property. Many have lost homes and loved ones.

I have been in contact with the children’s families and am pleased to report that all are accounted for. Those that have are gladly donating goods and food to those that are without, and despite blackouts and lockdown restrictions the teaching staff are earnestly working to administer final exams.

It has been a trying year but thanks to the effort and support of all involved, for us 2020 will be remembered as a year of overcoming the odds.

We have less than one month remaining to reach our goal.

Rounding the bend for the home stretch, a new wave of enthusiasm is revived as the end comes into sight. Those who have persisted, through what has been a difficult year, are reaping the fruits of their efforts. Confidence through achievement has boosted morale and earnt them a sense of satisfaction.

Everyone involved from parents, to teachers, volunteers and supporters have stepped up a gear to guide these children along, but we’re not quite ready to celebrate just yet. With a little over a month to go and one more round of exams,

a more concentrated focus is needed to get us to the finish line.

  • All Hands On Deck

      25 August 2020

As the world continues to adapt to a tide of constant change, the efforts and determination of all involved in providing for these children urges on.

Since the start of lockdown, the number of in-country volunteer teachers have gradually dwindled placing an increasing burden on the now sole remaining survivor. To minimise the adverse impact on students a call went out to all former volunteers for support. An international team rallied together to help.

Through the channel of online media, our students are now reconnecting with familiar faces from all across the globe.

  • Reports Are In!

      21 July 2020

Four the past 4 months, much of Central America has remained in lockdown. Schools, churches and non-essential business remain affected placing increasing burden on an already impoverished majority.

During a time of difficulty for many, there is still a ray of hope to celebrate. Reports for the second term indicate that most scholarship students have adjusted well. With the support of caregivers and boosted efforts from the staff and faculty of the school, many are achieving at the top of the leaderboard.

Every act of reassurance gives these children renewed strength to overcome the strongholds that bind.

  • Level Restrictions

With a reduction in restrictions around the country, the majority of children in New Zealand have returned to the classroom. For those in places where the virus has not yet been fully contained, this option is not available.

All efforts are being made to ensure the children continue to receive the best education possible under the prevailing circumstances. Volunteers and teaching staff have rallied together to provide classes online via social media. With ongoing support and encouragement from parents, initial feedback indicates that many are making good progress.

While the majority of Central America is still in lockdown, support from the local community is helping to at least put basic meals on the table. The aid of generosity from the international community will not only shoulder an increasing load, but fuel hope and drive determination for these children to reach for success.
