Help me raise funds for my Oceans of Hope Challenge NZ 2021 - a 6 day voyage on Steinlager 2 with others who have been diagnosed with MS.
Auckland
In July 2020 I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, after always being a fit, healthy and active person. To say this was a shock is an understatement. 6 months into what will be a lifetime journey with MS, and following a rollercoaster ride of MRIs, neurological & medical appointments, I am doing all that I can to live a positive and healthy lifestyle.
People with MS all experience different symptoms & challenges, for me it is mostly physically represented with a left leg "drag". For those who know me - no I won't be able to "sort out my knee" - but I will be able to work to re-strengthen and reconnect the neural pathways that help my body move effectively.
In this first year of my diagnosis, I have been given the opportunity to sail on Steinlager 2 for 6 days after Easter, with the Oceans of Hope Challenge NZ 2021. This journey will give me a chance to meet and sail alongside other like-minded people with MS who enjoy the outdoors and taking on new challenges. I believe it will further strengthen my resolve to live positively with MS.
While the voyage is funded by the Oceans of Hope team, there is a part-payment to meet. I'd love your support to help me on my journey, both on Steinlager 2 and with MS. You can find out more about the adventure here https://www.msnz.org.nz/oceansofhopechallengenz/
I need to raise $1500.00. This will cover all costs for me to participate in Oceans of Hope Challenge NZ 2021. Any money on top of this will be gifted to to Multiple Sclerosis Auckland to assist with their work supporting people with MS.
Home from the sea! 9 April 2021
Steinlager 2 set sail this morning from Kawau Island via the Tiritiri Matangi channel, on a downwind reach in a 15-20 knot nor-easter, after a final swim and a good breakfast.
The strong winds meant good sailing for the final leg home, and Duncs loved the opportunity to take the helm in these conditions. Coming up the harbour, the crew dropped anchor near the Chelsea Sugar Factory for a quick lunch before finally arriving at the Viaduct for a full boat clear-out and clean up.
Highs? Being at the Barrier for the first time ever, taking the helm and racing the (Year 10 Kings boys!) on Lion as they went past. And most of all being able to be with others with MS who understand your symptoms and situation, can share their experience and advice, and who you never have to explain yourself to.
Overall, an incredible experience and once again, Duncan is so grateful for your support to help him meet this Challenge.
I am sure he will be in touch with you all over the next while - thank you for reading these updates!
