With your help I'll be a big brave sailor in 2021 Oceans of Hope MS Sailing Challenge and set my sights on what I CAN do in the future.
Southland
Oceans of Hope 2021 in association with MS NZ and the NZ Sailing Trust are offering the chance for 22 novice to experienced sailors with Multiple Sclerosis to set sail from Auckland on a 5 day voyage in the Hauraki Gulf. 5-9 April 2021.
Kia ora everyone.
I am so thrilled to have the opportunity to crew on a yacht as a novice sailor. Not just any yacht but Steinlager 2 as part of the wonderful Oceans of Hope 2021 challenge. And I'm even feeling grateful for having MS -for the first time since being diagnosed at 47yo in 2008. MS (Multiple Sclerosis) is a chronic incurable condition where the body attacks the brain and nervous system. This leads to physical, sensory, cognitive and emotional challenges, many of which are not obvious and are difficult to explain.
The Challenge for me is: Being part of a crew of 22 magnificent sailors with MS on the classic racing yacht Steinlager 2. A great opportunity to learn new skills, meet others with MS and challenge myself. I'd love to re-connect with my pre-MS self and I can't wait to see how much I really CAN do.
How you can help: Some of you have already helped support me through the choppy seas of the first 13 years since MS diagnosis and I thank you so much for that. I've recently been able to settle happily in Aotearoa NZ. The MS crew sail away from Auckland in a fortnight, and any donations (including the little ones) will help me fund my place on this challenge.
The funds raised here will be used to pay for my costs in participating in 2021 Oceans of Hope Challenge. Any surplus funds will enable me to make some accessibility modifications at home, after repaying any potential loan from MS Southland Trust.
Thank you all for lending a hand 7 May 2021
Thank you, everyone. I'm so glad I took the plunge - both to ask for help and to take on this sailing challenge. I've come back more alive, optimistic and grateful for what I CAN do.
And, overwhelmingly, what I can do is ask for help when I need it. I have been overwhelmed at the kindness and thoughtfulness in everyone's gifts, from those of you who would love the opportunity yourselves to those who stick firmly to land based adventures. Every single contribution was a beautiful gift, and I hope you know that you all helped create an amazing experience. Thank you.
Thank you Sheree for your support. Excited but a bit scared at the same time. ⛵
Thank you. Yep.. they certainly do say that. Not long now... ⛵😎
Thank you Guy. Kate's knitting me special red socks for crewing on Sir Peter Blake's Steinlager 2. At least my ankles will look the part. Very excited.
Many thanks. ⛵
Thanks so much Laura. Very very exciting. 😎⛵
