Old Duck, New Race: Help Tarryn to represent New Zealand in Obstacle Course Racing World Champs!

  • 3 days, 4 races!!

And that's a wrap on a brutally tough, but good weekend. On the journey home, feeling somewhat broken.

    15km summary (actually 17km):

The altitude broke my lungs, the mountains broke my legs, the obstacles broke my arms, but nothing broke my spirit. I held onto my 100% obstacle completion band for 16km...but Dropzone claimed it! Gave it a good effort, with multiple tries, but just didn't have enough left in me to get to the end of that one.

17km, 850m ascent (from a base of about 2500m above sea level)...once again, humbling!

To put the difficulty into perspective, Only 4 ladies in my age group completed the course with 100% obstacle completion.

Team races was fun. A few errors early in the race meant we were out of the competition, so we used the opportunity to have fun and practice some of the tricky obstacles while we finished.

Thank you to everyone who helped get me to the start line (actually 4 start lines). I cannot express my gratitude enough.

    Next...home, recovery and reflection!!

      Well done, Tarryn!

  • Day 1 - 3km and 100m

What a day! What a course...brutal, and actually 4km, not 3km. Terrain was tough, but obstacles tougher. Hot, dry, windy, but oh so good. Completed both races, but without 100% obstacle completion, so time doesn't really count sadly. Gave it my all. Had a nasty fall on an obstacle leaving wrist/thumb a bit sore, so let's see how tomorrow goes.

Gosh, those mountains are pretty...although I'm pretty sure I didn't take in any view while watching my feet on Rocky terrain.

    Tomorrow...new day!!

We are en route. 2 days in LA, 1 night in a little town called Lone Pine. Mountains all around. Altitude here is 1500m above sea level...and we will drive today to start venue of race, which is 3000m above sea level. A few days to acclimatise before race weekend.

With 6 days until I fly out, Ive been working on a few last technique exercises and 1 handed holds. I wish I had a few more weeks...but I suppose I would always feel I need to do a little more!

Thanks for all your support and encouragement...nearly there.

August has seen good progress in mileage, strength improving, wrist feeling great...but now the household has some Winter germs. Forced rest!

    What's next? Get better...and then:

    Hill work

    High altitude simulation

    Bouldering for grip strength

    Some long runs

    Some trail runs

    Let's go!!

I've attached August training screenshot...each green bar is a training session, with compulsory 1 day rest each week.

Gosh, I've missed races. There just aren't enough OCR races in New Zealand. This past weekend I competed in 2 events at the Waurau Warrior...the 3km and 10km. Failing 6 obstacles in each event resulted in a total of 360 burpees (30 per failed obstacle). Disappointingly, this was more failures that last years race, but the obstacles were harder and I couldn't push too hard due to wrist injury.

But I loved being out there, meeting new people, making new friends, and pushing into a pain cave you just don't get training on your own.

A few days rest and then back to training. (With a visit to physio for wrist injury to plot way forward).

Training slowed down a lot while on holiday. Airports, jetlag and being sick did not help. But I'm back!!!!Here's what I got up to last week:

    Monday - leg strength

Tuesday - arm strength and abs

    Wednesday - 8km run

    Thursday - legs and cardio

Friday - 5km run, arms and stretch

Saturday - 6km run and high intensity gym workout

Sunday - a well needed rest day

    Let's do it all again!

Thank you again for your support.

  • When you face obstacles to get to obstacles...

      20 March 2024

Due to a visa challenge (having to obtain a transit visa just to touch down in a USA airport), and no other affordable ways to get to Costa Rica without touching down in USA, I have had to shift my goal out to October's World Champs race (yes, there are 2 OCR World Champ races). Still requiring a visa, as this race is actually in California, this gives me more time to jump through the necessary hoops. Thank you all for your support, training continues, fundraising continues...
