Oscar bikes the length of New Zealand for Dyslexia

$4,395 donated
Given by 78 generous donors in around 4 months

Our 14yr old son is going to cycle the length of New Zealand, raising funds for the programme that helped him master his dyslexia.

Paraparaumu Beach, Paraparaumu

Oscar.... "I'm 14yrs old and I have dyslexia. I think and learn a little differently, but it doesn’t hold me back.

Dyslexia is a learning difficulty that can affect reading, writing, spelling and sometimes maths. When you try to read your brain may flip or jumble letters and words, making it hard to work out what’s on the page - even though your eyes see just fine.

When I was eight, I described it as “Its like looking through rippled water” - you see the rocks on the bottom but they are distorted and blurred. Despite working hard, I struggled to keep up and was not enjoying school. Fortunately Kenakena School had a dyslexia programme and that is when everything changed for me.

Starting on 31/10/25 I am currently cycling the length of New Zealand to raise funds for the programme that helped me manage my dyslexia, showing people that with help, dyslexia doesn’t need to hold you back."

Janet, Head of Dyslexia Programme, Kenakena School... "The dyslexia programme helps students understand how their brains work; the strengths and weaknesses. They all arrive on the programme struggling with a combination of reading, spelling, writing - basically anything to do with symbols or abstract concepts like time. They often have brilliant ideas - lots of them - but can’t organise or sequence them into a clear order"

Oscar (my son) went through this programme whilst at Kenakena School and it taught him how to master his dyslexia. It made such a difference to his school experience and is a lifeline for kids with dyslexia.

Use of funds

The funds raised will go to the Davis Dyslexia Programme at Kenakena School which is dependent on external funding for its continuation.

Mission accomplished!  4 December 2025

Many thanks to all who have contributed and followed Oscar and his challenge. We have moved the completion date so we can present the funds to the School in the new year. Hopefully this will help more kids access this programme and encourage other schools to provide this kind of support.
