Tonks, one of our resident cats at Purrs & Beans, NZ's longest running cat cafe, has taken ill suddenly and we need your help!
Birkenhead, Auckland
Our tuxedo boy Tonks has been at the after hours vet this weekend as he unexpectedly became quite unwell. After running a bunch of tests, he was found to be extremely dehydrated and with elevated kidney levels.
Though the diagnosis is inconclusive the vets' best guess is Tonks has chronic kidney disease. They have ruled out bladder stones or ingestion of a foreign object and while there is a small chance it could be a viral or bacterial infection, they suspect he may have come into contact with a toxic substance e.g lilies, raisins or antifreeze which causes damage to the kidneys. We do not have any of these on the premises so we are now concerned that someone may have placed one of these hazardous items through our catio fencing.
Thankfully none of our other cats have presented the same symptoms and we are grateful Tonks is stable enough to come home for now. We will continue to work closely with Ellerslie Veterinary Clinic (our usual GP for our furry family) on his treatment plan going forwards. Big thank you to the team at Animal Referral Centre in Albany for looking after our boy so well these last 48 hours.
The vet bills have racked up to 3k already and we anticipate further tests plus regular vet visits and medication to manage his condition from here on out. This pandemic has hit us hard and having to operate at reduced capacity over this lockdown has meant a significant drop in our revenue.
We are committed to ensuring our Tonks’ health needs is not compromised and he receives the best care possible. If you are able to help contribute towards the bills from this weekend and his ongoing vet costs we will be most grateful.
The money raised will contribute towards Tonks' ongoing care
Tonks update 12 November 2021
We wanted to give everyone an update on how Tonks is doing after his unexpected weekend away at the emergency vets!
We're happy to share that while he is still feeling quite delicate from all the tests, clinically he is doing well and his kidney value have stabilised. A bounce back like this is pretty unprecedented - even the vet was baffled! - so unless something unforeseen crops up again, we appear to be in the clear.
Given this, we have reduced the goal on his fundraiser to the amount that we spent at the after hours. If you are in a position to do so, we would appreciate a donation as 3k is a big dent in our bank account, especially while we are operating at extremely reduced capacity due to Covid restrictions.
Big thank you to those who have already donated!
